It isn't surprising that the medical industry produces most of the top paying salaries in America. Physicians, family practitioners and pediatricians typically earn more than $160,000 in any given state. However, more specialized medical care providers such as surgeons, gynecologists, obstetricians, internists and anesthesiologists can earn a yearly salary of at least $165,000. Podiatrists, those who study the foot, make somewhat less at $125,000.
These salaries don't come without a lot of education. Training to be a doctor requires both a four-year undergraduate degree, along with four years of intense medical school studies and a mandatory two-year residency program with a medical care center. As opposed to physical pain, those who experience mental pain see psychiatrists, who earn an average salary of just over $150,000.
Shifting to another type of medicine, the dental industry, surgeons top the list of pay with an average salary of $190,000. Oral surgeons who perform surgeries on the jaw and mouth can make upwards of $200,000 a year. Other oral doctors, such as orthodontists who help to realign a person's teeth and jaw with the use of braces and other devices, also earn similar pay. Dentists receive salary earnings very close to oral surgeons, and schooling is virtually the same. Prosthodontics, those who construct oral prostheses for missing teeth, do quite well with an average salary of $156,000. Regionally, go to sunny Los Angeles for a high-end salary in this profession.
Airline Industry
Pilots, co-pilots and flight engineers have daily stresses associated with being responsible for the safety of thousands of people per day. Along with the stress comes a very large paycheck, an average salary of more than $115,000. Pilots fly not only people, but also cargo, through the use of multi-engine planes. However, pilots do require years of expensive education. If you're looking at the airline industry, point yourself towards New York State, where pilots can earn more than $150,000 a year. Air traffic controllers, those in the industry working from the ground, can expect to earn more than $105,000 a year.
Legal and Business Industry
Along with doctors, lawyers are traditionally thought of as earning large yearly salaries. While it can take a few years for an emerging lawyer to begin earning six figures, it can be a very lucrative career. With an average salary of just over $124,000, lawyers in the Washington, D.C., area earn much more. However, a legal education can be expensive, and like their medical counterparts, student loan payments often absorb a large part of a lawyer's take-home salary.
At the top of the business sector are Chief Executives, with annual salaries of $160,000. Managers in the science and engineering industry can expect to earn close to $120,00 a year.
