Job Description For A Senior Marketing Manager

A senior marketing manager is responsible for a product's success.

A senior marketing manager has a broad set of responsibilities in an organization, which start with ensuring the success of the company's product or products through the use of appropriate pricing, advertising and other marketing communication techniques. This is a highly paid and high-level position in an organization and a specific background and set of skills are expected of candidates.

Job Responsibilities

The senior marketing manager has varied job responsibilities, but top priority is the marketing of one or more of the company's products. This involves development of the marketing strategy as well as planning and managing all activities related to advertising and promotion. All print and broadcast efforts are under the direction of the manager, and coordination with the media and advertising departments is required. Awareness of relevant market conditions and trends and crafting the company's response to them is also an important role for the senior marketing manager. The marketing budget is set by the manager and it is his responsibility to ensure the desired financial outcomes for all marketing initiatives.

Technical Skills Required

Candidates for a senior marketing position must, above all, have excellent written and verbal communication skills. Writing samples may be required by some organizations and others may want a demonstration of your ability to speak to a group. Other demonstrable skills that companies look for are problem-solving, attention to detail and organization. The presence or absence of these skills will often be communicated through your resume and during the course of an interview. It is usually necessary to be familiar with some types of software programs for word processing and spreadsheet analysis, as well as software for financial analysis.

Non-Technical Skills Required

A senior marketing manager is expected to be a high-energy individual with the ability to lead and to persuade. Working collaboratively with others, both within and outside the company, is required and, as a manager, decision-making is a large part of the job. Some companies also emphasize the importance of being able to work under pressure in a stressful environment in order to be a successful senior marketing manager.

Education and Experience

A college degree is typically required for a senior marketing manager position and an MBA or other graduate degree could potentially be beneficial. Because this is a senior position, a minimum amount of prior experience in marketing and in the company's industry is likely to be necessary, often as much as eight years.

Compensation

Compensation for a senior marketing manager position varies widely by company and region of the country. According to Glassdoor.com, a company that provides online salary information on specific companies, base salaries for senior marketing managers average between $115,000 and $130,000, but can be well below or above that at specific employers. Senior marketing managers at many companies are also eligible for annual bonuses, typically a percentage of base salary.
