Product Packaging Options

Product packaging is not only important because it protects the product from damage. Companies also use it as part of a marketing strategy to significantly differentiate a product from others, especially when the product is in a retail environment alongside competing products. Fortunately, different product packaging options are available to businesses.

Plastic Molded Packaging

Plastic molded packaging is one of the more typical types of product packaging. You can find it encasing many of your favorite products, from toys and snacks to soda and cosmetics. Such packaging insulates the product from the outside elements fairly well. Plastic molded packaging is highly customizable, which makes it a packaging option that many companies prefer.

Vacuum Packaging

Vacuum packaging is for perishable food products or products that may degrade if exposed to sealed oxygen for prolonged periods of time. Examples of food products that benefit from such impermeable packaging include fish, cheese, bacon and processed meats. Vacuum packaging works by inserting the product into a thick, plastic bag, which can often be made using multiple layers of plastic. Air is then pulled out of the bag using a vacuum, creating a seal, which tightly conforms to the shape of the product and leaves no excess air inside of it.

Color and Differentiation

Companies want packaging elements that set their products apart and connote integrity and quality, or that call to mind certain things. Color is one of those elements; for example, green conjures up natural or organic in the minds of consumers. Playing with color can contribute to customers gravitating toward your product. Some companies opt for nontraditional packaging to set themselves apart, such as by using small burlap bags or by not having any packaging at all, beyond a simple tag indicating the brand and model.

Clamshell Packaging

Companies have long used clamshell packaging for toys and electronics. As the name suggests, the packaging is in the shape of a clam. The packaging is very secure because it is airtight, offering maximum protection. An example of clamshell packaging is your plastic CD cover, or even your flip phone.
