As of December 2009, the banking profession is projected to grow 8 percent in coming years despite the down economy, according to the United States Bureau of Labor Statistics. If you work in the banking field, you may start yearning for a higher-paying position. In that case, create a promotional portfolio to show prospective or current employers exactly why it's beneficial to give you a better position.
Material
Most promotional portfolios consist of a three-ring binder. Beyond that, your portfolio can be made out of any material, whether it's plastic, card stock or leather. Choose a material that looks professional and has a subdued color theme. Avoid binders and folders with bright colors as these may seem juvenile or amateurish. While that might work in a creative field such as graphic design, simple portfolio materials work best for gaining a high-paying career in banking. Purchase clear plastic sheathes in which to place relevant papers and information, rather than hole-punching the papers directly.
Gather Information
Include any information in your promotional portfolio that can help you get a better job in banking. Ask current and previous supervisors for letters of recommendation. Make copies of any awards or certificates that you have achieved during your career as a banker. If you're new to this career, include material on your education experience, especially as it relates to banking, mathematics and accounting. Look for any material that will make you stand out from other applicants for the position. Prospective employers should get a good idea of your banking skills from looking at your portfolio.
Sections
Separate your promotional portfolio into sections. Start off the portfolio with a "Professional Profile" section that starts with a detailed banking-related resume. Place recommendations here as well. Put the most positive recommendation first. If a former employer wrote about how well you managed his bank, place this first. Use an "Education Experience" section to list transcripts, honors awards and other school materials related to banking. Place your awards and certificates in a separate section. This is the best place to put your "Bank Branch Manager of the Year" award.
Online Portfolios
Physical promotional portfolios are best when you're going for interviews in person. If you haven't scheduled any interviews yet, consider creating a secondary portfolio online. Include a link to this portfolio in applications or emails so prospective employers can get a quick look at your experience before meeting with you.
