Give Pens For Gifts

There are many options to consider when choosing a pen as a gift.

Choosing the right pen to give as a gift takes the same thought and attention as selecting and giving any other gift to someone --- make your choice based on the recipient's personality, the usage, and your budget. Purchase a single pen, a his-and-her set as a shower or wedding gift, or buy pens in bulk for someone who owns a business. There is a pen style, type and brand to fit every personality and budget.

Instructions

1. Set your budget before you shop. The cost of a pen can range from under a dollar into the hundreds, even thousands of dollars, depending on the style and brand. If your budget is large, consider the masterpiece of pens, Montblanc. Each pen is individually made and numbered and come in a variety of finishes from stainless to gold or silver plate. Pens encrusted in gemstones --- even diamonds --- are available. The prices can run to over $1,000. Less expensive but classy pens like Cross pens can be found in many finishes and styles and can be purchased for under $20.

2. Look at a variety of pens before you buy. Browse online pen retailers. Or visit your local department stores, stationery shops, or jewelry stores. Many office supply stores carry pens for gift giving. Pens are available in a vast array of styles and colors.

3. Choose from ball point, fountain, roller ball, fiber tip or gel ink. Ball points are a good choice for everyday writing. Fountain pens make a nice gift for the executive, lawyer, banker or doctor. They are used primarily as a signature pen, inking the final line of a document. The ink is water-based and refillable. Roller ball pens have a smooth writing feel and finish, similar to the fountain pen. The ink is oil-based, allowing for continuous writing without frequent refilling. Fiber tipped pens are non-refillable, yet provide a clean, bold line for drawing or signatures. Gel or liquid ink pens create clean, fine lines. If you are buying a fountain pen, purchase a bottle of ink to go with it. You can purchase refills for quality ball point and roller ball pens.

4. Decide if you would like the pen engraved. Many fine pen companies such as Cross will block or script engrave your pen selection for free. Others charge a small fee, with the cost dependent upon the number of letters and style. Or, if you are purchasing inexpensive pens to give to a business owner as a promotional idea, you can buy in bulk and have the pens imprinted with a company logo or slogan.
