Banking Interview Tips

There are some key points to remember when interviewing at a bank that will help leave a positive impression. Although many banking jobs don't require high-level college degrees, banks want professionals who demonstrate diligence and attention to detail. These tips will help you nail your next interview at any bank.

Instructions

1. Dress for success. Most banks have a dress code, and knowing this can give an interviewee the edge. Ladies need to wear close-toed shoes with pantyhose. Men should wear a button-down shirt with a tie and dress slacks, if not a full business suit. Look your best.

2. Provide an error-free copy of your resume. Make sure your resume has all of your contact information clearly printed. Highlight previous employment and skills that demonstrate the ability to work with money and a variety of customers.

3. Be friendly. Banks rely on their employees to be the face of the bank. To leave the best impression, smile a lot and answer questions openly without getting too personal. This is a bank, not a therapist's office. Managers want friendly employees who do the job quickly without getting into someone's entire Friday night out with the girls.

4. Express a desire to grow. Employment at a bank offers many opportunities for growth. Although many positions require little more than someone with a high school diploma, no felony arrests and a clean bankruptcy history, bankers want a candidate who wants to grow into bigger positions with the bank. Tellers often move into sales positions or management.

5. Follow up. Banks are an easy place to follow up in a friendly, casual manner. Don't just follow up with the interviewer, but do some banking and talk to the tellers who already work there. A good word coming from someone already at the institution can be the deal maker.
