What Kind Of Jobs Accept A Minor In Marketing

Many careers require you to know sales techniques.

Marketing is the attempt to present services or products in a way that will make them attractive to customers. At the university level, marketing is a common major because it combines creative skills such as writing and art with business. However, you don't have to major in marketing to have a career associated with sales or persuading customers; many students choose another major in business or another area and pursue marketing as a minor. The minor in marketing is useful to college students considering going into any type of business.

Management or General Business

Many students who select a major in management or general business elect to pursue a minor in marketing. Such majors are a natural fit for a marketing minor, because anyone who wishes to manage or own a business must know entice customers to use his product or service. This knowledge is especially critical for the small-business owner, because she might not have access to a marketing department that can create ad copy.

Technical Writing

Technical writers are writers who focus on writing for business and industry. Some technical writers work for large companies, particularly software companies or large manufacturers, but many work freelance or create their own consulting firms in their area of specialization. As a result, they need to know self-market their skills to persuade clients to hire them for their writing projects.

Culinary Arts

Chefs and caterers are more likely than ever to go into business for themselves. Cooking skill, however, doesn't guarantee that the chef knows anything about business or market food to customers. A poorly designed menu that contains too many items or doesn't match the expectations of the diners will not be successful. Therefore, it is useful for chefs and food service business owners to understand skills such as menu design, writing ad copy and creating effective displays for diners to view.

Artists

Only the most successful artists have gallery contracts and support teams that present their work to the public on a regular basis. However, artists do have to spend time convincing galleries to do showings of their work, or if they run their own shows or booths, then they must be prepared to discuss their work with both of these audiences in an effort to make sales and support themselves.
