Start Up Your Own Catering Business

Knowing start up your own catering business will help you become the entrepreneur of your dreams. You can start and run the catering business out of your home depending on the rules and laws of your county. Catering is a business that can grow quickly as word of mouth spreads the word that you make great food.

1. Business Start Up


Visit your local county recorders office to file a fictitious business name statement for your business. There are many steps to filing, including posting it in the newspaper and paying the filing fees. Ask the county recorder about the other requirements for your city or county such as business license, location requirements, resale license or state registration.

2. Create a Menu


Create a menu based on the foods that you prepare the best. Take your best recipes and create the menu around them. You will need different menus and different pricing structures for various events. You will be catering birthday parties, graduation parties, weddings, funerals or wakes, and other larger parties. You will need some menus that consist only of appetizers and some menus that have full meal plans.


You will need to have a vegetarian meals, chicken, beef and seafood meals. Some menus will need to include drinks such as beer, wine and champagne.

3. Create a Price Sheet


Create a price sheet for you various menu plans. If you want to be a caterer, you will need to have a profitable yet affordable business. You will attract more customers if you are known for fair and reasonable prices and excellent food. Do not price your food too cheap because it will make your business look like it is not offering an excellent product.


4. Print Cards and Brochures


Print business cards and brochures for your new company. You will want to include all of the necessary information on your cards and brochures. You may not want to include pricing on your brochure if your pricing changes often or is based on the market price of fish, etc.


Make sure that all of the information on your business card is accurate. You will need to be available to your customers when they need you. You can have your business phone number and your cell phone number on your card if you want to, or you can just place your business phone number on the card and forward the line to your cell phone when you need to.


5. Promote Yourself


Promote yourself and your food by giving out samples whenever you can. Take samples of your best foods to every event that you possibly can and pass them out. Take them to parties, your kid's soccer game, and other events.


If people love your food, they will remember you when it is time for them to hire a caterer. Everyone needs to hire a caterer eventually for some kind of event.


6. Advertise


Advertise your new catering business in your local newspaper, local telephone directory and online.
