Create an industrial design portfolio by demonstrating your design abilities to shape the way we experience manufactured products. You must show how your creativity allows you to produce eye-catching designs and give examples of your abilities to present your creations. The portfolio must highlight your drawing and modelling capabilities and show how you can use computer programs to create graphical representations. It must showcase your use of color and your sensitivity to form and function. A good industrial design portfolio impresses by the design of the portfolio itself, by the design of the subjects and by the way the designs are presented.
Instructions
1. Plan your industrial design portfolio. Choose an overall design theme with page designs and header structures that repeat. Design a cover page that reflects the style you are employing throughout your portfolio. Design a table of contents or menu page that gives the major themes of your portfolio in an attractive and easy-to-understand fashion. Add a resume page with education, training, experience, skills and awards. Decide which sample projects to include, to highlight your capabilities. Close with a summary page that repeats those aspects of the portfolio that you want the recipient to remember.
2. Expand the presentation of each project that you have decided to include. Develop a structured way of displaying your work on each project within an overall framework, but use the different projects to showcase your different skills. Show your overall design talents in all the project sections, but use the first project to display your mastery and understanding of color, form and function. Make sure you demonstrate drawing ability, preferably with the extensive use of graphics software, in another project. Show off your modelling skills and craftsmanship in a third. Start each project section with a page that indicates the skill you are presenting and aims to surprise the recipient with its level of expertise and originality.
3. Assemble the industrial design portfolio. Prepare an online version first because it is the most flexible. Add graphics and video clips to the project sections. Upload to the Internet and view the result to check that everything looks as planned. Prepare a digital version that can be distributed on a CD, DVD or memory stick.
Prepare a version that can be printed out in PDF format. Replace the video clips from the online version with static images. Change links to text references. Format for 8.5-inch-by-11-inch paper. Print out a glossy copy on a high-resolution color laser printer to check that the printout looks as planned. Prepare digital copies that can be distributed on digital media.
