Design Your Own Salon

Completed salon.

Every great salon starts with a plan, including design. A great salon design is key to running a successful business. It may seem only necessary to focus on services, but the atmosphere of a salon can really help or hinder your success. Before hiring new stylists or even choosing a salon name, an owner must plan out the right design for her salon. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Choose your location. Before you can properly design your salon, you'll need to know how the layout and how much space you'll be working with. Most salons are about 1,200-2,000 square feet and usually operate in one of three places: storefront properties, strip malls and free-standing buildings. Pay particular attention to where the doors and windows are when you are designing your salon.

2. Decide which major stations will go where. There are four distinct areas in a salon: reception/retail, shampoo, service and storage. You'll want half of the space to be dedicated to services, or where your clients will get her hair cut and styled. The rest of the space should be split up between the other three sections.

3. Pick a theme or colors to incorporate into your salon. You'll want your salon to look like it has been thoughtfully designed, not as if a bunch of random art has been thrown in to fill in space. Keep in mind that salons are meant to be relaxing and refreshing. When you are choosing your colors, try to stay with neutral and cool colors.

4. Pay attention to the lighting in your salon. Appropriate lighting helps the stylists see true hair colors. Halogen lighting can fade over time and change the way the color of your client's hair looks. Lighting is also important for your salon's image. You'll want to stay away from extremely bright lights and choose soft lights that are inviting to your customers.

5. Set up the retail products where customers can easily see them. Dedicate space in your reception area to for a few shelves to hold all the shampoo, conditioners and other hair products for sale. A good place to have the products available for sale is behind the counter. Clients will see the products when they sign in and when they are paying their bills. Retail sales are a great added bonus to your salon's income.
