Start An Advertising Business Online

More advertising money is being spent online.

According to the Interactive Advertising Bureau, online advertising is increasing by at least one percent of total yearly ad spending, despite the recession. Businesses are not only spending more on internet advertising, but they are also decreasing their spending on traditional media, such as magazines and newspapers. Online advertising is expected to continue growing over the next few years. Start your own online advertising business before the market is saturated to gain a share in this recession-proof business model.

Instructions

1. Create a directory website that lists all forms of online advertising for a particular niche. For example, create a directory that lists places for restaurants to advertise online or a directory for baby-clothing stores to advertise online. Offer free entry into the website for all website visitors.

2. Search the web for websites that cater to your niche audience. Find websites that have high traffic and offer online advertising. Email websites, if necessary, to find out their advertising rates and specifications.

Create a spreadsheet listing all advertising websites found. For each site, list the name of the website, the URL, type of advertising offered (banner, pay-per-click, sponsored content or other). Also list the cost, ad specifications (image size or number of text characters) and advertising contact.

3. Create an online database from the advertising spreadsheet you created in Step Two, listing all advertising media and their details. Feed the data to your website.

4. Create an online advertising-directory homepage, which gives a brief overview on how businesses can use online advertising to attract new customers. If your directory is catering to baby-clothing stores, for example, explain that good places to advertise include sites that cater to work-at-home mothers and housewives or specialize in child development.

5. Add a search button on the homepage that enables visitors to find advertising websites. This will allow visitors to perform free text searches of these websites, using any keyword or phrase they want.

6. Add a simple "browse directory" button that opens a new webpage listing all websites in your directory. This is helpful if you list fewer than a hundred websites. If your directory is large, list all the letters of the alphabet on your homepage and let users browse the directory by clicking on the first letter of a website's name.

7. Add links or buttons to the homepage that link directly to different forms of advertising. Create a link called "Banner Ads" that links to all websites offering banner ads. Create another link called "Pay-per-click Ads" and another link called "Sponsored Content".

8. Create additional links that divide ads by price range. Create a link for "Under $100 a month", "$100 to $500 a month" and another link for "Over $500 a month".

9. Make money with your advertising business website by soliciting advertisers to sponsor your targeted website directory. Contact advertisers in your directory by email and ask if they would like sponsored placement on your website. Offer extra benefits for sponsored placement such as top placement in search results, unlimited text describing their site, a graphic placed next to their website link, reviews of their site or banner ads.
