Bulletin Board Ideas To Promote Reading

Not only is reading educational, it's also enjoyable. No matter if you're a classroom teacher, a librarian or a school administrator, you can promote a love of reading in students by creating bulletin board displays that highlight the activity. Colorful reading-themed bulletin board displays will catch the eye of students, encouraging a desire to read.

Hooked on Books

This bulletin board display utilizes fishing as a means of encouraging students to read. Use a vibrant blue-colored paper to line the back of the board, creating a water scene -- use a black marker to create the look of waves in the water, if you'd like. Cut out fish shapes from construction paper and print out the covers of various books. Glue the covers of the books on the fish shapes and hang them on the board. From gray construction paper, cut out the shape of a fishing hook and attach it to the end of a length of yarn. Hang the length of yarn on the board so it looks as if it is being submerged into the water, creating the look of a fishing line. Add the caption, "Hooked on Books" to the display.

Nuts About Reading

Use a cheery squirrel to promote reading in your school. Use any color paper you'd like as the background of this bulletin board display. Print out the image of a large squirrel and hang in on the center of a bulletin board. Draw the shape of a book and place it in front of the squirrel to make it look as if it is reading. Draw acorn shapes on construction paper and cut them out. On each acorn, write the title of a book and place them around the squirrel. Write the caption, "Nuts About Reading" on the top of the display.

Explore the World

Highlight the idea that reading can take you places with this bulletin board display. Cover the bulletin board with a world map. Print out images of book covers that are about different parts of the world -- "Guatemala Rainbow" by Gianni Vecchiato, "The Story of Chopsticks" by Ying Chang Compestine and "Look What Came from Ireland" by Miles Harvey. Cut pieces of yarn and hang them on the board so that they are coming out of the country that each book highlights, and on the end of the yarn, hang the cover of the book. For example, a piece of yarn would connect the country of Ireland to the book about Ireland. Print the title, "Explore the World through Reading" on the top of the board.

Reading Helps You Bloom

Use a colorful garden to promote reading. Hang green paper on the bottom of the board as grass and blue paper on the top of the board as the sky. Cut out a large circle from yellow paper and hang it on the top of the board as the sun. Print and cut out or create your own flowers and hang them on the board so it looks as if they are growing out of the grass. Print out images of different book covers and attach them to the blooms of the flowers. Write the caption, "Reading Helps You Bloom" on the board.
