Put On A Pet Contest

Some pet contests feature exotic animals such as iguanas.

Pet contests are a fun way to raise money for your school or organization. You can hold a pet contest on its own or in conjunction with an event such as a carnival or fair. Charge a $5 or $10 entry fee for each pet entered in the contest. To raise even more money, set up a donation area to allow attendees to give to your cause, if they choose to do so.

Instructions

1. Enlist the help of friends, colleagues and family members. Ask them how they would like to participate and designate roles for them. For instance, several people can help you brainstorm ideas for the contest, a few can run the actual event and others can help you advertise it.

2. Choose which type(s) of animals you'd like to feature in the contest. Maybe you want to focus solely on dogs or cats, or perhaps you'd like the contest to center around more exotic pets, such as tropical birds, iguanas or guinea pigs.

3. Select a theme for your contest. Ask pet owners to dress their pets in costumes, or hold agility or tricks competitions. You also can judge pets on cuteness, intelligence, manners or uniqueness.

4. Ask people and businesses to donate prizes for your contest. A pet store might be willing to offer gift certificates, or a dog or cat groomer can donate services. You also can offer cash prizes with the money you collect from the contest entry fees, although this will cut into your profits.

5. Set a date and secure a location for your contest. Choose a public place such as a city park or a dog park, or hold the contest in a school or church parking lot. Check with your local city hall regarding permits you might need and guidelines you'll need to follow. For example, some municipalities might require that pet owners show proof of vaccination.

6. Advertise your pet contest. Free ways to promote your contest include creating a page on social networking websites such as Facebook and MySpace. You also can place free ads on online classified sites. Ask local newspapers if they can donate free ad space for your contest.

7. Hold your event. Ask the people helping you to arrive at the location several hours early to post signs, set up any booths you'll use and prepare refreshment stands.
