Senior Account Manager Job Description

A senior account manager supervises a sales team of account executives.


The bottom line for a senior account manager is sales. The senior account manager is responsible for identifying sales opportunities, creating sales goals, developing new accounts from new clients and maintaining existing sales accounts. A senior account manager holds a dynamic position that sometimes involves working around the clock and supervising a team of account technicians to prepare sales proposals. There can also be travel to client business sites while expanding a client base for particular goods and services.


General Duties


The senior account manager is typically the supervisor of account technicians. In this position, he assists account technicians in marketing, sales presentations and meeting sales targets, and provides mentoring for account technicians. The senior account manager also shares important business skills and is a support individual for the account technicians. The senior account manager is also a part of the hiring process in selecting potential account technicians.


Skills


A senior account manager must be a great motivator and encourager of account technicians, and must always engage new or existing clients cordially. The human factor plays a big role in this occupation. The senior account manager must have an aggressiveness and confidence, while at the same time maintaining the aura of customer service. The senior account manager must constantly train an account management group or account technicians in developing the skills that she possesses.


Work Environment


The work environment for a senior account manager may include travel. The manager can work in excess of 40 hours per week and will be called upon to assist account technicians in their duties. There are typical weekly and monthly sales meetings that the senior account executive is responsible for. The work environment can be stressful and demanding, but rewarding at the same time.


Salary


According to the Payscale.com, the average annual medium salary for a senior account manager with five to nine years experience is between $51,393 and $75,698. There are employers that pay bonuses depending on sales objectives and goals. Senior account managers for large organizations may get extra perks such as a corporate car to drive from client to client or a corporate credit card for travel.


Educational Requirements


Most employers prefer an individual seeking a position as a senior account manager to have a BA or BS degree in business, marketing or business management. According to the Bureau of Labor job outlook report, between 2008 and 2018, the demand for senior account managers is expected to grow by 24 percent.
