Instructions On Creating Balloon Designs

Instructions on Creating Balloon Designs

Balloon decorations are a versatile way of decorating for any event from a child's birthday party to a grand opening celebration. You can create anything you desire through the use of balloons, and balloon designs can come in any color. Creating your own balloon designs takes a bit of planning and preparation, according to Matt Harkins, a professional balloon sculptor, who has spent years perfecting the art of creating original balloon designs. Does this Spark an idea?

Create a Design from a Sketch

Sketch out your ideas first. Harkins suggests you do not start with the balloons. Begin with your idea. Draw out on a piece of paper what you want the final design to look like. If you know the theme but do not have a specific idea, it may be helpful to look at magazine pictures or online picture resources, such as the photo gallery at the website for "Balloon Magic Magazine." After you have a clear sketch, start making a list of the balloons you think you will need to create the image you sketched. Next to the type of balloon, write the quantity you will need. For example, to create a palm tree, you may decide to use emerald green # 646 balloons for the color and ability to hold helium. In that case, you will want eight #646 balloons to make the top of the palm tree look full.

Create a Design from a Picture

Take a picture of what you want. For example, if you know you want to create an 8-foot Christmas tree or a palm tree, take a picture of one. Use the picture of the tree as a model when you try to determine recreate the tree in balloons. When using this method, Harkins suggests taping the picture to a blank sheet of paper, and then drawing the tree in balloons. This will help you to decide what type and size of balloons you want to use in your balloon sculpture.

Create a Design with Balloons

Gather together all the balloons and supplies you think you will need to create your balloon design, and start putting it together. Doing this before the final product is actually needed for the event will allow you to experiment with different ideas and to determine what will work best. According to Harkins, he never presents a completely new design without creating it first at home. When trying to create the design for the first time, you need to start with the base. Determine what would be the best way to make sure your sculpture stands up and in place. In the example of the tree, you will likely want to use a 12-by-12 inch metal base with a 1/2-inch diameter pole going up from the center. The height of the pole will depend on the height of your tree. Once you have established a sturdy base, you can start inflating and adding balloons. This method will allow you to make changes as you are creating it.
