Measure For Carryon Baggage

Measure your carry-on bags before going to the airport,

Carry-on bags are among the items you can keep with you during airline travel. If you want to travel light and fast, taking just carry-on luggage means that you can skip waiting for checked bags at the luggage carousel. Airlines aim to keep the passenger compartment safe and organized, which is why restrictions and size limits are imposed. Measure your carry-on beforehand to ensure that it meets all of the airline's requirements.

Instructions

1. Check the length, width and height of your carry-on bag in inches using a tape measure.

2. Put the bag on a scale to measure for weight.

3. Check the carry-on policy of your airline. The requirements vary depending on the airline and are subject to change, so make sure you consult the most updated information. As of May 2011, United Airlines and American Airlines only allow carry-on bags that can fit under the airline seat or in the overhead bin. The carry-on bag cannot exceed 9-by-14-by-22-inches or a linear measurement of 45 inches. If your carry-on does not fit these dimensions, the bags will have to be checked in.

Use the linear measurement if you are unsure which parts of your bag is considered the length, width or height. The formula for linear measurement is: length + width + height. Most airlines list carry-on limits on their websites.

4. Check the airline policy for carry-on weight restrictions. Most airlines do not have weight restrictions for carry-on baggage for domestic travelers. United Airlines has location-specific weight regulations for travelers flying within Asia or the Middle East. The maximum allowed carry-on may depend on cabin class or special rewards status. Exceptions are often allowed for active U.S. military personnel and dependents.
