Internet Based Communication Tools

Several types of communication technology rely on the Internet.

Internet based communication tools, also called online communication tools, can be separated into two categories: synchronous and asynchronous. Synchronous communication technology allows for real time communication, while asynchronous communication technology allows a person to communicate at his convenience. According to the National Center on Disability and Access to Education, common forms of synchronous communication include forums, chats, whiteboards, and voice over IPs (VoIPs). Asynchronous communication tools include emails, websites, and streams.

Forums

Forums allow for a user to interact with other users, typically through a question and answer format. A user posts a question and other users can chime in with their answers. For example, an aspiring writer might go to an online forum for writers and ask "What advice would you give an aspiring writer?" Forums may also be referred to as discussion boards, discussion groups, or bulletin boards.

Chats

Types of chats powered by online communication include instant messages and website chat rooms. Instant messages work well for one-on-one conversations. Website chat rooms allow for group discussion.

Whiteboards

Internet based communication whiteboards simulate a traditional whiteboard. ASAE & the Center, a leadership association, recommend using whiteboards for sharing ideas.

VoIPs

VoIPs work like to phone calls, except a VoIP utilizes an Internet connection rather than a phone line. Equipment used with a VoIP may include a USB headset or handset.

Email

Email is a commonly used type of asynchronous Internet-based communication. Email works well for maintaining long-term communication. Additionally, email allows a person to save messages and review them at a later time.

Websites

A website serves as a medium for sharing important information in a way that the information is available at all times. For instance, a retail store can create a website to share important information, like store hours and company policies, with customers.

Streams

Online streams can come in the form of audio and video. ASAE & the Center recognize audio streaming and video streaming as helpful communication tools for online learning. For example, a professor could post her lectures as video streams.
