An attorney always needs to be in a marketing mode to keep his practice going. New clients are important to the survival of any law firm, and marketing to attract those clients is an ongoing process.


Organize Your Efforts


There are many different types of law, and there are many different types of clients. In order for your law firm to succeed, you need to find a focus and market to an audience within that group. If you are looking to do real estate law, then begin networking with real estate agents and take out advertisements in the local real estate magazines. A concentrated marketing effort will achieve better results than a vague and general approach.


Take some time to define the goals of your firm in writing, and then share those views with the rest of the people in your organization. When the whole group understands the goals, then everyone can feel as though they are a part of the firm's success and they can also help spread the word to people they know about what your group does.


Plan it Out


If you have decided to expand your marketing efforts to include a more dynamic Internet presence, then take some time to map out what the goals of that effort are and how you intend to accomplish them. This is referred to as critical thinking time, and it is essential to the success of every marketing effort you create. Set aside a couple of hours to write down all of your ideas, and then brainstorm on solutions to how you can accomplish those goals. If you feel more comfortable working with a partner, then include her in your sessions. Writing down a plan and then following it increases the chances that the plan will succeed. Make time to create a marketing plan, and take your marketing seriously.


Networking


Lawyers rely on referrals from existing clients for new business, but it is important to be out in the community talking to as many people as possible to try to secure business from as many sources as possible. Effective marketing is putting yourself in situations where you can talk about your practice to people who may benefit from what you have to offer, and the best way to do that is to get involved in the social and business networking groups in your community. Being a lawyer is a very interactive profession, and you need to make yourself available and show that you are an accessible lawyer whom people can talk to.
