Cite An Interview In A Research Paper

Interviews are great sources of information.

Research papers are the bread and butter of most writing classes in high school and onward. More than a few of these will require more than just information you've pulled from books or the Internet. Odds are pretty good that you'll have to talk to a real, live human being at some point, so it's good to know cite your source.

Instructions

1. Ask your teacher what style of citation you should use for this paper. There are several different styles of citation, and using the wrong style can lose you serious points when it comes time for grading.

2. Interview your source. Write down your source's name, the date of the interview and the position held by the interviewee. All of this information will be important for your citation.

3. Plug the necessary information into the proper citation style format. If the assignment calls for an MLA style, first write the name of the person interviewed, the type of interview it was (i.e., personal, over the telephone, etc.) and then the date of the interview, all separated by periods. Here's an example:

John Doe. Personal Interview. January 1, 2011.

In the APA style, you want to first write the name of the person interviewed, then in parentheses the date of the interview in a year, month, day order. In a new sentence, write the person's title or qualification. Finally, put the type of interview in its own sentence at the end. Here's an example:

John Doe (2011, January 1). Professor, City University. Personal Interview.

4. Include the in-text citation. Rather than having to write out all that information over and over again, you can just put the last name of the person interviewed and the date of the interview in parentheses after the quote or paraphrasing of the information. Here's an example:

Taxis in New York are expensive (Doe, 2011).
