Interview Questions For Jobs In Advertising

Advertising agencies are often fast-paced, exciting workplaces that offer many types of career opportunities, and many people with marketing, business and creative educations or work backgrounds try to enter the industry. If you are seeking an advertising position and have been lucky enough to land an interview, be aware of the many types of potential interview questions you may be asked.

Industry Questions

Many advertising agency hiring managers will want to know about your overall knowledge of the advertising industry. Some of these types of questions may include inquires about the local advertising market, current media trends and consumer buying habits in relation to advertising. Other important industry-specific questions may be, "Why are you interested in entering the advertising world?" or "Why do you think advertising has the power to influence people?" Most interviewers will ask you questions about the future of the industry such as, "How has the digital age impacted the industry?" or "What is the most significant effect from online social networks on the way advertising agencies do business?"

Advertising Knowledge Questions

Along with understanding the ins and outs of the overall advertising industry, you'll want to prove your knowledge of advertising as a business. Some hiring managers will ask questions such as, "What do you think is the best way to measure the effectiveness of an advertising campaign?" and "What is the hottest advertising medium in today's market?" Another typical interview question is, "How would you design an advertising campaign and choose the best medium to promote it?"

Creativity Questions

No matter what type of position you are applying for, most advertising agencies want to hire people who think creatively. For example, not only do they want the best writers and art directors, they want account managers and salespeople who will use creative tactics to win over sought-after clients. You may be asked questions that allow the hiring manager to gauge your way of thinking, such as, "What kind of qualities do you have that will make you successful in this field?" and "Give me an example of a past project (either winning a client or designed an ad) that set you apart from your co-workers?"

Specific Agency Questions

Most interviewers will want to know why you want to work at their agency, and you'll need to prove this at an interview. Common types of these types of interview questions may include, "Why should we hire you over other candidates?" and "What do you bring to the table that will benefit our current client list?" If you've done your research on the agency, you should be able to answer these questions by giving specific examples of their main client list, as well as talk about the advertising medium the agency is known for, such as print, television or digital ads.
