Entrylevel Communication Careers

Entry-level PR jobs provide an opportunity to get a foot in the door of the industry.

Entry-level careers in communications are highly sought after by anyone who wants to get a foot in the door of the public relations industry. Those who land entry-level jobs in small communications departments or firms are more likely to gain broad experience in the full field of communications, while those who work in large firms with several PR professionals tend to gain specialized experience in one area of the industry, such as policy or dealing with the media.

Communications Assistant

Communications assistants provide administrative support to the department.

A communications assistant is an administrative assistant to the communications department or division of an organization. He may provide administrative support by handling incoming queries over the phone and in person at reception; he may also maintain communications files and provide clerical assistance with the publication and distribution of communications materials.

Marketing Communications Coordinator

Marketing communications coordinators work in departments that perform both marketing and communications functions.

Marketing communications coordinators assist with both marketing and communications initiatives in organizations that have a joint department for both marketing and communications ("MARCOM"). A marketing communications coordinator assists in the writing and circulation of such materials as press releases, communications policies, marketing plans and website copy and acts as a liaison between the media and the head of the MARCOM department.

Event Coordinator

Event coordinators organize and publicize special events.

Events that are held annually or otherwise periodically -- such as festivals, fundraisers or political campaigns -- require an event coordinator to oversee the events from start to finish. Event coordinators lead a committee in the planning and execution of the event. They also oversee the creation and distribution of promotional materials for the event, such as posters, newspaper ads, Internet ads and radio and TV commercials.

Communications Officer

Communications officers monitor the media, among other responsibilities.

While communications officer positions are not typically entry-level, they occasionally go to a job candidate who has excellent academic credentials or specialized internship experience in lieu of work experience. A communications officer is responsible for such duties as writing speeches, developing a list of media contacts, setting up interviews between officials of the organization and the media, briefing officials prior to public speaking engagements or meetings, and staying abreast of pertinent news by monitoring media.
