A pixel site with no advertisers buying ad space will look like a blank canvas of pixels.
Pixel websites sell advertising space by the 100-pixel blocks (or predetermined volume of pixels) to interested parties. The first one was created by British student Alex Tew in an attempt to make $1,000,000 from selling the ad spaces. (See Reference 1) Creating your own pixel website can be done with minimal start-up costs and time, but be aware that the profit you make is proportional to the amount of advertisers that buy ad space from your site.
Instructions
1. Purchase a domain name. The name can be any that you want, but try to get a TLD (top-level domain or dot com suffix) that is catchy and memorable. As of October 2010, domain names can be purchased anywhere from $1 to $15.
2. Get hosting for your domain. Find an affordable host which provides mySQL, PHP and the ability to change permissions of files and folders. A shared hosting account will work and only costs around $5 to $10 a month, as of October 2010.
3. Sign up for an online payment processor, such as PayPal. This account will be the one you will receive payments into. Create a buy now button using the service and copy and save that code.
4. Create an index file for your website by logging into your control panel at the hosting website, and then navigate to the "File Manager". Add the following code to the file: name of your website. Then add the tags: directly after the tag. You can add a header image here, but be sure to add information explaining the basics of your website, such as the price of advertising and the size of ad spots. Place the Buy Now button you created earlier on the page somewhere (preferably toward the top).
5. Create the images for ads in an image creation/editing program such as Microsoft Paint. Upload this file to your website. When an individual buys an ad, take the picture they give you and scale it to fit with the image you created here, and take the URL of their home page and paste it into a word document. Place the code: anywhere between the body tags of your web page, changing the relevant information to that of the advertiser. This will turn that image into a link that will lead to the advertiser's website.
6. Promote your website by using paid traffic, search engine traffic or social media sites. You can also try listing your site with pixel site aggregates. (Reference 2)
