Magazines are addictive reading matter that many people subscribe to and read on a daily, weekly or montly basis. Nowadays there are magazines for every profession, hobby and interest. If you have a passion for literature, education and entertainment as well as a niche you might want to start your own magazine.

Instructions

1. Research industries and select an industry or topic that you know really well and are passionate about. Find out what other magazines exist on that specific topic. Know who your competition is. Learn about their demographics, readership numbers, subscribers versus outlet purchases and other distribution statistics. Eighty percent of start up magazines fail, but that is because they are poorly researched and marketed.

2. Create an outline of all the possible sections and special features you want your magazine to feature. Try to make it familar enough to readers that they'll be willing to pick it up, but different enough that it stands alone. Look for writers who will write these various sections and ask for their opinions and advice regarding the sections, they might think of something terrific that you didn't. Hire them and start getting the sections together.

3. Hire a photographer to shoot photos to accompany each article or section as well as the cover photo and all other photos needed. Be open to their suggestions and look over all their footage to see if they did something else that catches your eye and is unique, or that can be even be used for something in the future. Try to give your photographer a lot of assignments at once and get a day rate so you can save a few bucks. Contact advertisers in like markets that as your competition. Provide advertisers with rates for various amounts of ad space and frequency.

4. Put the magazine together using a computer program. Find a local printer who can give you a deal on printing. Request a proof copy to approve before it goes to print. This is very important because you need to make sure it looks the way you hoped, since you will be putting a lot of money into this and your advertisers have certain expectations. Have double the number of copies you think you will need of the first issue printed so you can provide these free to some people in order to market it.

5. Create a website for your magazine. Set up the distribution channels for your magazine; online, print, new media and so forth. Start advertising and getting paid subscribers. As your publication grows in popularity and readship new avenues of distribution, expand your resources in getting better interviews and even hire more writers or give your current writers raises. Who knows? Your magazine could become the next Time.
