A marketing press release is written to get press coverage about an event, award, honor, or new product or service. Companies produce these releases to capture a media outlet’s attention and get placement in media publications. Press releases announce new location openings, new product launches, employee promotions and company partnerships. The more newsworthy and interesting the press release is, the better chance it has to secure media placement.
Instructions
1. Write a headline. The headline of a press release should tell the reader in a few words what the press release is about. It must also be newsworthy to journalists. For example, your headline might say, "ABC Financial Institution Announces New Location in the Pearl District Community."
2. Write a dateline for the release, which identifies the location from which the information is released. The dateline begins the first paragraph of the press release.
3. Write the release's opening paragraph, which begins right after the dateline. This paragraph should briefly touch on all of the most important information about the subject of the press release. Discuss what is happening, who is participating, where the event or product launch will occur, and why it is occurring.
4. Create the body of the press release. The body of the press release goes into further detail about the event or announcement, and provides the reader with all the key facts. It should include at least one quote to provide color. Typically, this quote is from a key person involved in the event. For example, if the press release is announcing the opening of a new company location, include a quote from the CEO or the vice president of sales.
5. The final paragraph of the press release should direct people to where more information can be found. For example, "for more information about the new Pearl District location, visit www.xyzbank.com or call 222-222-2222."
6. Create a boilerplate at the bottom of the press release. The boilerplate is a consistent paragraph of key information used for every press release. It’s often similar to an "about us" page on a website. Include company details, such as whom the company serves, the number of customers and any interesting history about the company, such as about its founding.
