Green technology is having an impact on the way that companies do business in the world today. Key factors are sustainability and the conservation of natural resources. This focus on green technology is also having an impact on the job market. Specialists are required to work in the industry, and a few jobs in particular are becoming sought-after.


Travel and Tourism


Travel and tourism are industries that seek specialists to do a number of jobs, including retrofitting hotels and restaurants to utilize green technology and to market and promote those companies. City Planning


City planning and urban design careers are being created for professionals who work in green technology. Focuses include wetlands restoration, storm water management, transportation and waste management. Professionals specializing in planning and design oversee recycling projects, the purchase and use of public transportation that is more environmentally friendly than those that utilize fossil fuels and the design of areas to be used by the public. For example, parks in many cities are using recycled plastic play equipment made from old soda bottles and ground cover that was once old tires.


Ideal candidates possess a degree in urban or regional planning. Pay ranges based on experience and education. The size of the municipality is often a factor as well. As of 2010, planners were starting at an average of $30,000 per year and capping out at an average of $100,000 per year.


Managing Information


Green energy needs are presented to the public by individuals trained to understand how green technology works. This creates jobs for professionals in sales, computer software design, counseling and consulting. These professionals sell equipment and provide training to companies. They also work with the public and create social awareness campaigns to educate people on utilize and manage green technology. Fundraising projects need to take shape and business plans must be created for companies that get involved in green technology.


Degrees in information technology are often required, and experience in computer technology, sales and marketing is desirable. As of 2010, salespeople were starting at an average of $35,000 per year and computer technicians involved in networking and data management were starting at an average of $40,000 per year.
