Advertise A Website On Yahoo

According to JP Morgan, as of January 2010, Yahoo! had the world's largest share of online search advertising.

When a small business advertises with Yahoo!, the advertisement shows up on Web searches performed by potential customers. When a customer clicks on the advertisement, she is directed to the business' homepage where she can purchase the small business' goods or services.

Setting up an advertising account with Yahoo! is quick and easy. With an afternoon's work, a small business can be advertising online the next day.

Instructions

1. Determine in what geographical locations your want to run your advertisement.

2. Brainstorm keywords that relate to your business and the goods and services you provide. Consider preparing a final list of at least the top three to five keywords you think best represent your business.

3. Consider your business' advertising budget. According to Kevin Stirtz of AllBusiness.com, your advertising budget should run between 4 and 8 percent of your desired gross revenue. If you're a new business who is trying to build a customer base, the higher end is recommended; however, if you're an established business, the lower end may be more appropriate.

Divide your budget by 12 to determine how much you can spend per month, and then by 30 to determine how much you can spend advertising per day. For example, if your budget is $1200, divide $1200 by 12, which equals $100 per month. Divide $100 by 30 to equal $3.33 per day. Round this final number down to $3.

4. Brainstorm what you would like your advertisement to say. Your ad will need a title (ideally the title of your business), a description and the URL of your business' Web page. Your title can be up to 40 characters in length, including spaces, and your description can be up to 70 characters, including spaces. After you have written down several titles and descriptions, choose your favorite.

5. Navigate to the Yahoo! Search Marketing page to sign up to advertise with Yahoo!.

6. Select the geographical market where you would like your advertisement to run under the "Select a Market" heading if you don't want it to run in the default United States and Canada option.

Select your local time zone under the "Select a Time Zone" option.

7. Click the "Get Started" button on the bottom of the page.

8. Select whether you want your advertisement to run throughout the entire United States and English-speaking Canada or if you want it to run regionally.

If you select regionally, a box will open up that will allow you to select in which regions you want your advertisement to run. You can choose a specific city or several locations. Click the "Search" tab if you want to advertise in one location, click "Bulk" if you want to advertise in multiple locations. Enter the city or ZIP code in the "Search" option; enter the ZIP code or the name of the city for multiple targeted cities, one location per line, in the "Bulk" option. You will be presented with text options of the geographic locations you have entered. Click the boxes next to the text of the locations where you would like to advertise.

9. Click the "Next: Keywords" button.

Enter the keywords you listed in Step 3 in the box located on the right side of the screen. Enter one keyword per line.

10. Click "Next: Related Keywords." Yahoo! Search Marketing will analyze the list you created in Step 9, and make additional suggestions in a box on the left. When you find a keyword you like, click the "Add" button located to the right of the search term. The keyword will be added to your list you entered in the box on the right.

Yahoo! Search Marketing will allow you to enter up to 50 keywords. Add as many keywords as possible for search engine optimization.

11. Click the "Next: Pricing" button.

Enter the final number you arrived at in Step 3 into the "Account Daily Spending Limit" box. For example, if your yearly budget is $1,200, you will enter $3 into the "Account Spending Limit" box. Based on your entered budget, Yahoo! Search Marketing will provide you with a suggested bid to offer to pay each time your ad is clicked on by an interested customer. Leave the suggestion as is, or feel free to delete the suggestion and enter your own, either increasing or decreasing the suggested amount.

Yahoo! Search Marketing states it will never charge your more than your offered maximum bid and you will only pay when your ad is clicked.

12. Click "Next: Create Ad."

Enter the title you created in Step 4 into the "Title" box. Enter the description you created in Step 4 into the "Description" box. Enter your website's URL into the "URL" box.

13. Click the "Next: Review" button. Yahoo! Search Marketing will show you a preview of what your advertisement will look like.

14. Click the "Next: Review and Activate" button. Enter your desired username into the "Username" field. Enter your desired password into the "Password" field. Re-enter your desired password into the "Re-enter Password" field. Enter your e-mail address into the "E-mail Address" field. Re-enter your e-mail address into the "Please Re-enter Your E-mail Address" field. Enter your company name into the "Company Name" field. Enter the numbers and letters shown in the box below the "Enter Security Code" box into the "Enter Security Code" box. Click the "Activate Now" button on the right.

Your advertisement will now go live online. When someone clicks your advertisement and is directed to your website, Yahoo! Search Marketing will bill you.
