Start a Book Club for Children
Starting a book club for children isn't unlike starting a book club for adults. Many of the same planning aspects can be used to successfully start a book club that kids can simultaneously enjoy and find educational. Follow these tips to start a children's book club and make it a success.
Instructions
1. Find potential book club members. Contact the parents of children who enjoy reading books and inform them of your plan to start a book club. Encourage them to tell others of the book club's existence. You may also advertise a children's book club by creating, printing and displaying flyers at churches, schools and libraries.
2. Pick book club members if you have more than 12 people express interest in it. Try to select between eight to 12 people who genuinely enjoy reading books.
3. Decide on the regularity of meetings. Most children's book clubs meet twice a month or once every month.
4. Choose locations at which to hold book club meetings. Some children's book clubs require that the parents of members take turns hosting meetings in their homes; other book clubs decide to meet in libraries or bookstores. If you decide to use private homes as meeting places, discuss the particulars with other parents.
5. Set up rules for the book club. Make it clear that the time devoted to book club meetings should be used to discuss books. Some young people may expect the book club meeting to have a party-like atmosphere.
6. Select methods of choosing reading material. You may decide to line up a year's worth of books before the initial book club meeting or you may want to only plan ahead by two books and consider other members' input.
7. Appoint a book club secretary. A secretary should be able to document book lists and keep on top of sending out book club member notices such as meeting reminders.
