Are Commercials Bad For Kids

American kids are in love with television.

Children view more than 40,000 television ads per year. This exposure can lead to serious negative effects on children's health, behavior, self-image and habits. Accordingly, encourage your kids to skip commercials whenever possible.

Food Advertising and Obesity

A study conducted by the Committee on Nutrition, a division of the American Academy of Pediatrics, found that half of all TV ads are for food, particularly sugared cereals and high-calorie snacks. Healthy snacks, on the other hand, are advertised 3 percent of the time. As a result, children request more junk food, which leads to obesity.

Effects of Alcohol and Tobacco Advertising

Producers of alcoholic beverages spend about $5.7 billion a year on advertising and promotion. At $11.2 billion per year, the expenditures of tobacco manufacturers on advertising and promotion is even higher. Extensive research has shown that adolescent drinkers are more likely to suffer from alcohol advertising than adults. In addition, more than 20 studies have found that children who are exposed to cigarette ads are more likely to become smokers.

Children's Television Act of 1990

The Children's Television Act of 1990 is designed to protect children from excessive TV advertising. It limits advertising on children's programming to 10.5 minutes per hour on weekends and 12 minutes per hour on weekdays. However, during prime time, adverting reaches an average of nearly 16 minutes per hour.

Marketing Techniques

There are a number of techniques that advertisers use to target child audiences. These advertising devices include product placements in movies and TV shows, tie-ins between movies and fast food restaurants, and tie-ins between TV shows and toy action figures.
