Public Relations Coordinator Job Description

Employment of public relations specialists is expected to grow by 24 percent between 2008 and 2018.


A public relations coordinator works to create and maintain an organization's favorable public image and protect its reputation. She often reports to the director of PR or communications and works with staff in various departments such as communications, marketing and development. A PR coordinator may work in a variety of employment settings including large corporations, nonprofits, universities and hospitals.


Responsibilities


While specific responsibilities may vary by organization, they tend to include liaising with the media, writing news releases, monitoring media coverage, assembling media kits, writing and designing newsletters, assisting with fundraising, holding events for the public and overseeing the organization's branding through logo use and print materials.


Qualifications


Qualifications for this position typically include a bachelor's degree in communications, PR, journalism or marketing and two years of PR experience. Previous experience working with the media is often a plus.

In addition to education and previous experience, there are a number of personal attributes employers may seek in a candidate. These include excellent writing and speaking skills, strong communication and interpersonal skills, organized, deadline-oriented, creative and the ability to work as a team.
