Compliance & Regulatory Affairs Manager Duties

Consultation skills are a must for this job.


A Compliance and Regulatory Affairs Manager works in a variety of industries and this role is found in government, the not-for-profit and private sectors. Compliance and Regulatory Affairs Managers have diverse backgrounds, depending on the industry they work in, and may hold any combination of education and experience. Compliance and Regulatory Affairs Managers keep up-to-date with government and industry issues while ensuring their membership (often their staff and fellow employees) are well-represented in committees and at conventions.


Compliance


Ensuring his organization remains compliant with government and industry standards is a major part of the work of a Compliance and Regulatory Affairs Manager. This role liaises with industry and government officials and communicates updates to all levels of his organization. This role also works with in-house public relations counsel to communicate updates related to employee work.


Lobbyist


Playing lobbyist is another major part of this role. A lobbyist is a representative of a company or agency who promotes the needs of her organization and her industry at one or several levels of government. Compliance and Regulatory Affairs Managers market the needs of their organizations to government and ensure that legislation, particularly new legislation, is positive for their lines of business. Marketing skills, as well as a sense of diplomacy, is key for these duties.


Research


Although a Compliance and Regulatory Affairs Manager may have research staff at his disposal, guiding the type and focus of research is a part of his role. Leading studies and releasing reports on best practices, trends and issues within industry is another part of his responsibilities. This professional may also serve on committees and act as a source of information to other researchers.


Internal Communications


While the primary role of a Compliance and Regulatory Affairs Manager is working with external stakeholders to positively enhance the legislative and industry environment for her organization at the external level, there is a high level of internal work for this job. The manager works with senior leaders, managers and employees at all levels of her organization in an effort to understand the needs of employees and other internal stakeholders. Having a strong command of the industry and an appreciation for the company's lines of business is essential for success.
