Instructions

Creating a Website

1. Do you need a website for your business?

Explore what kind of website you need. Are you going to be using the website for personal blogging, or do you need to create a website for your business? Knowing what type of website you need---personal or professional---will help you decide what platform you want to use to acquire and publish the site. It will also help you determine what types of features you need on the site. For example, if you are selling products on the website, you may turn to e-commerce tools and need the help of a web developer. Bloggers can use traditional blogging platforms such as WordPress.

2. Should you hire a website designer?

See if you need a designer. Nowadays, there are various platforms that enable individuals with little design know-create the website. You may want to use a premade template if it's a personal website. For business, getting something custom-designed probably works best. Talk to web designers and developers to get quotes for creating the website.

3. Find a website host.

Look into hosting options. When you have a website, you will need to host it somewhere. A host gives you the space to keep your website running. There are a variety of hosts out there, and plans can be quite inexpensive---most are just a few dollars per month.

4. Are you "dot com" material?

Find a URL/domain name. For business, a custom domain is best. The electronics super-giant Best Buy can be found at www.bestbuy.com. Do you need your own dot-com? If you are blogging, you may be able to use a WordPress URL. Many hosts will let you purchase domains through them, or you can purchase the domain separately through a domain provider such as www.godaddy.com.

5. Publish on your own or with a designer.

Publish your website. Do you want to be able to make changes to the website, or do you need a static "brochure" website to drive customers? If you're blogging, most platforms make it simple to instantly upload content (such as www.blogger.com). If you use a designer, you can either give him changes or get the files and make your own. Many businesses use content management systems (CMSs) to upload fresh content as they need to. A developer can help set up a CMS for you so you have full power to upload content whenever you want.
