Why Are Hr Training Needs Assessment Instruments Important

Why Are HR Training Needs Assessment Instruments Important?

Human resources (HR) training needs assessment defines the knowledge, abilities and skills needed by the workforce to meet the organization's performance requirements. It identifies the gap between current and desired performance, analyzes causes and recommends methods to bridge that gap.

Significance

An assessment of training needs helps the organization to pinpoint areas where intervention is needed. The company can then direct resources to these areas through appropriate training programs or other management solutions. By responding to identified performance gaps, the company can improve employee productivity and work quality.

Features

Training needs assessment involves obtaining data such as strategic plans, HR metrics, job descriptions and performance appraisals. Some instruments used in data collection include questionnaires, direct observation, focus groups, interviews and tests. Data is then analyzed to define performance problems and issues, and determine the causes.

Considerations

Assessment of training needs can be done on three levels: organizational, occupational and individual. It answers the questions--what needs to be done and why it is not being done. The final step is to review different performance solutions and assess if training is the best approach.
