Resume Objectives For A Communications Technician

Communications technicians install and maintain telecommunications equipment.


A resume objective, or a career objective, is a one-sentence statement placed at the top your resume that describes what kind of position you're looking for, what skills you hope to use and what you hope to learn in your next job. Communication technicians work installing, testing and maintaining telecommunications equipment. Resume objectives for these job seekers should strive to link career aspirations with current technical skill sets.


Focus on the Job You Want


Communications technicians work in a variety of settings. While some might install cable modems on behalf of service providers in customers' homes, others install, maintain and configure networks for large corporations. Look at the job description for your target position. Consider the key responsibilities and which of your skills are most relevant for meeting the employer's need.


For example, a communications technician working for a cable company will probably need well-developed interpersonal skills, according to Alberta Educational Profiles. These professionals don't just install digital cable boxes; they also need to answer consumer questions while on site, and may be expected to inform customers of cost-saving deals and promotions. Emphasize your people skills in your resume objective if the position description indicates that such skills are important. For example: "A technically trained professional eager to serve customers as a cable installation technician, drawing on interpersonal skills developed through three years of management experience."


Show, Don't Tell


A general rule of thumb for powerful resume writing is to show that you have a skill, rather than just saying you have it. This idea even applies to the short objective at the head of your resume. If you say that you have a certain characteristic or skill, back up your claim with evidence that verifies the extent of your accomplishment. For example, if you're applying to a position as a telecommunications technician and you want to highlight your extensive experience with PBX and VOIP, don't write: "A well-rounded professional with extensive knowledge of PBX and VOIP seeks a position with a respected company as a communications technician." Instead, try something like: "A professional with five years experience installing and maintaining PBX and VOIP systems seeks a position with a respected company as a communications technician."


Don't Highlight Your Weaknesses


While your resume objective can help you communicate your commitment to career growth, don't emphasize a key skill required for the job as something you'd like to learn more about. Employers want to see that you have a solid skill base to take on the role, but that you're willing to accept more responsibility to learn skills not directly required for your work. For example, a job description might indicate that you'd be working with a team of IT professionals. If the job demands extensive knowledge of telephone controls, describe your expertise while expressing desire to learn more about IT leadership. "A formally educated professional with three years of hands-on experience in telephone networking, interested in a role as a communications technician in a team environment where I can learn IT leadership skills."
