Make Your Own Advertisement Flyer

Make your flyer stand out from the rest.

No matter how good your product or service, you won't sell anything if no one knows that your business exists. Advertisement flyers announce your presence to your community, greatly increasing your odds of a sale. The best flyer is one that attracts the reader's attention, then holds it with a direct explanation of your business.

Instructions

1. Open your preferred word processing program. Start a new file. Click the "Center" button on the main toolbar to center all the text on the page.

2. Type a heading at the top of the page. Use as few words as possible, because people want to get right to the heart of the advertisement and know what you are selling. No one has time for elaborate text. Phrases like "easy" and "how to" catch a reader's attention by cluing them in to what the flyer is about. Drag the mouse over the font to highlight it, then click the "Font Size" drop-down box in the main toolbar to enlarge the font. Use the biggest font that allows the heading to take up no more than 1/4 of the page.

3. Press "Enter" twice to make space for a colorful image two lines below the heading. Colors stand out more than black and white. Go the the main file menu and click "Insert," then select the option to insert clip art or an image from a file. Find an image, preferably of your product or a person who looks like a member of your target audience to help people imagine themselves using your product or service. Select the image you want, then click the button to continue. Click one corner of the image and drag it to resize, if necessary, so that the image takes up no more than 1/3 of the page.

4. Change the font size to 14. Press "Enter" twice, then click the "Bullet list" button on the main toolbar. Use as few words as possible to type a benefit of your product or service next to the first bullet that appears on the screen, then press "Enter" to produce another bullet to type another benefit. Type three to five benefits, each telling the reader why they should care about your product or service. Words like "free" and "guarantee" make a reader feel safer about responding to the ad.

5. Press "Enter" twice, then type contact information for your company. This is crucial since without it, no one can respond to the ad. Choose the means of contact where the reader is most likely to get a response (for example, don't provide an email address that you don't check).

6. Click the "Spell Check" button on the main menu to scan for misspellings on the flyer. Improper spelling can turn readers off from your company. Click "Ignore" if the spell checker mistakes a word (such as your company name) for a misspelling, otherwise select the properly spelled word from the list and click "Change". Click the button to continue when the spell check finishes.

7. Go the main file menu and click "File" then "Save as ... ." Type a name for the file, such as "flyer1.rtf". Click "Save" to save the file.

8. Return to the main file menu and click "Print" under "File". Print one copy of the flyer for every place you plan to post it, plus three or more extra copies in case you need them. Use bright paper to add color to the flyer if your printer doesn't print color, but use white paper if you can print color. This keeps the colors on your flyer from becoming a distraction.

9. Visit places that attract a lot of people who are likely to use your product or service. Ask management at each place if you may post your flyer, then tape it in as many places as they allow. Without a manager's approval, you may face repercussions for posting an ad.
