Read Personal Ads

People post personal ads when they want to meet someone special with whom to build a relationship. But reading through personal ads can be a bit confusing. Some can be very hard to understand; for example, a person may write a description that is almost entirely abbreviated. Understanding what certain phrases and abbreviations mean in personal ads could help you read them with ease and prevent you from skipping over a potentially great match.

Instructions

1. Look for signs that the person posting the ad is already in a relationship. Most people write a personal ad when they are single and looking for someone new. Others openly state that they are in a committed relationship. A statement to pay attention to is one that says "I am looking for a friend." then that person is most likely already in a relationship. People who post a personal ad in the dating section, saying that they are looking for friends, are more often than not looking for an affair or a backup (in case the current relationship crumbles).

2. Learn the common abbreviations. Most are fairly obvious: "M" and "F" for male and female, "S" and "M" for single and married. "B" and "W" usually stand for black and white. But pay attention to the context; for example, "SWF" means single white female, but "W4M" means woman looking for man.

3. Read for signs of unresolved past-relationship issues. Some people may jump into writing a personal ad before they have fully dealt with what happened in the last relationship. Certain statements are pretty obvious signs---for example, "I hope you are not like my ex, who constantly...." You also should use caution with anyone that says, "I recently got out of a relationship."

4. Look for a picture. When people do not post a picture, it may mean that they think they may not appear attractive to others or that they will be judged. Some post pictures that are severely outdated or that are not their own. Check for a date stamp on the photo and, if there is none, ask the person how recent the picture is.

5. Check what the person is looking for. Some people want to meet a particular type of person and will be specific about the qualities they seek. Those that are open to meeting all kinds of individuals will be more vague; for example, they may give a fairly broad range of acceptable ages.
